Activities

This area is rich in history, with so much to explore. Kilmartin Glen is just minutes from Kirnan, with its famous museum and access to many ancient historical sites with standing stones, ruined castles, burial sites and rock carvings. The world-famous Crinan Canal lies just three miles from Kirnan, and in spring and summer is a sailor's paradise. Excellent restaurants abound and the area is famous for its seafood. Guests can enjoy cycling, walking in breath-taking scenery, fishing, horse-riding, golf at top local clubs like Macrahanish, and sailing. Kirnan attracts many wildlife lovers, as within the estate we have buzzard, osprey, three types of deer, red squirrels, pine martens and Scottish wild cats. Stalking can be arranged, and guests have access to Kirnan's five miles of the salmon and trout river, The Add, with many named pools. Ghillie fishing is available, and we can also arrange loch and sea fishing.

There are many family-friendly activities close by, such as the ‘Seafari’ trip around the islands to see dolphin, seals and occasionally whales, and from Kirnan there is easy access to the beautiful West Coast islands such as Iona, Staffa, Islay, Arran, Mull, Colonsay and Gigha. Daily boat services connect you to the islands within an hour’s drive of Kirnan.

Kirnan is very much a haven for bird-watchers, and there are many rare species to see, including sea eagles, osprey, buzzard and heron. The marshlands at Kirnan are home to the very rare Marsh Fritillary butterfly, one of the very few sites in the world where they breed.

There is never a season when Kirnan is not a fascinating place to visit. In the summer enjoy the warm, sunny days ideal for walking and sailing, in the autumn witness the ever-changing colours of the forests, in the winter enjoy the dramatic skies, walk in the piercing, frosty days and then enjoy a glass of whisky by an open fire and in the spring enjoy the incredible show of rhododendrons at Kirnan.

This is a food-lover's paradise and we are happy to recommend and book tables for you at the many excellent restaurants near here, such as the Kilberry Inn which won Scotland's regional 'Restaurant of the Year' award this year. Here at Kirnan you will have a plentiful supply of fresh eggs from our free-range chickens and our extensive vegetable patch will soon be yielding organic produce you can pick by hand. Locally-produced food is plentiful and delicious, with fish and seafood such as lobsters and crayfish fresh off the boat in the nearby town of Tarbert and locally-produced meat at the Barbreck Farm Shop.
